Thank you for your interest in the HSHS Modern Dance Program for the 2012-2013 school year.  Due to the popularity of the program, unfortunately there is not enough space to accommodate all those who request the courses of this program.

All returning students (entering their 2nd semester of dance or more) MUST audition for placement into the program each year

New students to HSHS enter into the Modern I class regardless of prior training/ability unless they transfer from another Wake County High School Dance Program.  Students are only allowed to register for ONE semester their first year with the program unless they attend the audition and are approved for full year participation.

Over 100 students request the Modern I course each year.  Enrollment in the Modern I elective is limited to 80 students.  Priority is given primarily to rising Freshman then Sophomores, followed by Juniors and Seniors.  Upperclassman with dance career interests are strongly encouraged to attend the audition to help secure placement.

Students should bring a writing utensil with them to fill out a quick questionnaire and wear appropriate dancewear as listed below.  They will be taught a movement phrase and given time to practice during the first hour of the audition time.  Beginning at 6pm they will perform in small groups infront of a panel of judges.  Students must be prepared to remain the ENTIRE time (9pm) as many will be needed for callbacks.  Dancers should report to the dance studio as early as 4:30 to get their number, fill out paperwork and begin stretching.  The instruction will take place in the studio.  Auditions will be held on the stage and are open for parents/visitors for viewing.

Congratulations to the HSHS "Junior Rockettes"!!!!!

Each year the Holly Springs High School Dance Program produces the Nutcracker for their community.  The dancers, who star as the Toy Soldiers in this holiday production, used their kickline magic to win the WRAL Junior Rockette competition offered in part by the New York City Dance Alliance and WRAL.  They were the viewing area's fan favorite as well as the group selected by the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes to perform an opening routine in their Christmas' Spectacular held at Durham Performing Arts Center on Sunday, December 20th at 12pm.   The "Happy Holidays" routine they are performing was created specifically for Rockettes production and will be shown as the opening act to their December 16th and 17th Nutcracker production.  Admission is free!

About the show:  This 90 minute production tells of the traditional story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince with a contemporary dance twist.  Variations include audience favorites such as Dance of the Snowflakes, Chinese, Arabian and Waltz of the Flowers but also include other routines such as Bollywood and our African ensemble.  The music is the Duke Ellington Jazz arrangment of the traditional score.

Modern Dance at Holly Springs High School

The WCPSS high school dance curriculum is directed by the NC Standard Course of Study, which closely follows the National Standards for Arts Education.  For detailed information visit

http://www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/artsed/scos/dance/dance9-12

The Holly Springs High School Dance Program specifically stresses the modern dance technique of Lester Horton, choreography and related dance studies.  Laban principles of Body, Space, Time and Effort are used to give the students a solid understanding of movement execution.  Students of this program will be frequently guided through the choreographic process, giving them opportunity to experiment with their own movement creations.   In addition to the traditional teaching of dance, students will learn elements of dance history and anatomy/injury prevention.  Beyond the skill and factual information however, comes the most important aspect of the HSHS philosophy of dance education;  Regardless of the student’s level of dedication to dance, the curriculum aims to further develop a greater understanding and appreciation of dance as an art form and the following personal character traits.

Self-Discipline ~ Respect ~ Responsibility ~ Courage ~ Perseverance ~ Creativity ~ Open-mindedness
